Dr James Naismith a gym instructor was originally the inventor of this game as he developed this game to punish his students in a different manner than asking them to do the regular push ups as a source of punishment. He made a basket on a wall and asked them to throw the ball into it this was how the invention of the game happened.
With passage of time Dr. James Naismith made changes in the game by reducing the number of the players to just five and started the use of dribbling in the game.
In 1930's and 40's college basket ball gained extreme popularity and the National tournament started.
NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) held its first tournament with 8 teams namely Texas, Oklahoma, Wake Forest, Oregon and Ohio State, Illinois, Brown, Villanova.
Presently there are 65 men teams in NCAA tournament and 64 women teams in NCAA tournament. The games are played for three weeks generally starting at the third Thursday of March and rolling through the first week of April.
