Calico cat is not a breed it's the colouration in them which gives them a name. Generally Calicos cats are females, as it is because of the presence of orange or black colour which express X chromosomes.
Female Calico cats carry two X chromosomes out of which one is from mother which represents orange colour and the other X chromosomes is from the father which represents black colour. And the white colour is caused because of the other genes.
Male calico cats are generally sterile and rare. The colour pattern present in the calico cat is due to sex-linked genetics and epigenetic. The inactivated X chromosome causes the colour pattern.
Genetically two x chromosomes are needed to produce a calico cat. If the colours are black orange upon the coat of a cat then that is said to be a calico cat and if the colours are blue creams instead of black orange then it is said to be a muted calicos .
Calico cats has tri colour on their coat. The colours present in calico cat can be red or cream, white, black, blue, brown, blue. The variations in colours are caused by the genes which dilutes and lighten up the basic colour and thus muted calico cats are produced. Muted calico cat have white cream and blue colour in them.
