Calico Cat Breed

Calico cat is not a breed; it's actually the colours present on their body that gives them a name. Calico cats are mostly in tricoloured they are red or orange, black and white all over its body. The colour can also vary it can be blue ,grey ,white and cream. There are number of varieties of Calico cats like tortoiseshells which have colour pattern of orange and black fur mixed.

The Cat Fanciers' Association (CFA), is the world's largest cat registry. According to it, there are about 16 breeds of cat that comes in calico patterns and these includes large Maine Coon Calico, Persian with long flowing coat in calico pattern.

The breeding of the calico cats is bit difficult, as calico cats are mostly females as they have two X chromosomes and the male cats have X and Y chromosomes and that is why they are rare and sterile, and it is because of the genetic mix that produces a Calico.

It is difficult to breed Calico kittens. A cat must possess two genes at a same time to be included in Calico category, it is very difficult for the males calicos to possess this trait that is why calicos are mostly females.
