Transport Facilities Available At Host Cities

FIFA is the world’s well renowned game series that is waited by the fans throughout the year.  This is one of the most interesting games of all and to ensure the comfort and safety of the public that are going to come for watching the matches, the South African government is well preparing for it.  To ensure that all the transport problems and facilities are under control during the FIFA event, host level transport programmes are being introduced by the host cities for safe and comfortable commutation of the public and other special groups.

Durban is introducing some of the important transport systems in the city for safe and comfortable traveling of the public during matches from their living places to the stadium.  These includes the public transport interchange, construction of new railway station adjacent to the Moses Mabidha Stadium, public transport lanes for motorbikes,  they are going to upgrade the Western Freeway for fast commutation and special buses for tourists especially covering the beachfront route. 

Cape Town has done a major investment in the railway system especially for construction of the new railway station at Khayelitsha and Century City, the transport department has upgraded the Heideveld, Athlone, Lange and Cape Town stations, and new coaches will be introduced along with park and ride facilities.  They are also into construction of bus lanes on freeways, BRT, widening of lanes and upgradation of Koeberg interchange.  They are also going to introduce about 300 new buses during FIFA as well as going to improve the inner-city distribution system. 

Johannesburg which is the main host city is going to introduce Gautrain Rapid Rail link, introducing special public transport lanes and intersections, and interchange nodes.

Pretoria or Tshwane is also introducing special BRT system for FIFA, better access of roads into the city and links from city to airports and city to stadium.  Special type of municipal bus fleet will also be introduced for the FIFA event.

Nelson Mandela Bay is also going to construct the BRT system along with introduction of 45 high capacity buses.  A new modal interchange will be constructed at Korsten and Njoli Square.  They are also going to rehabilitate and widen the public transport routes at important points.

Nelspruit is also upgrading the national highway at northern bypass, developing the airport-city link and stadium, upgradation of roads, interchanges and footpaths in eastern residential areas are under way and multimodal and pedestrian facilities are also being taken care.

In Rustenburg, upgradation of western and eastern national highway bypass is underway along with taxi and bus facilities.  Investments are being made for secondary roads and links from city to stadium and airports and other access routes.

In Bloemfontein, developments are being underway for internodal public transport facility, taxi services, non-motorized public transport is being introduced, improved access from airport to city, and establishment of high capacity bus services.

In Polokwane also there is upgradation of roads especially to the stadium are underway, center bus terminal is being upgraded, along with taxi services and other transport facilities.
