Wind cave is the third longest cave in United States and the fourth largest in the world. It is located in the Black Hills of South Dakota. It was early discovered by Tom and Jesse Bingham in 1881.
It was rediscovered by white people in 1881, Alvin McDonald and J.D. McDonald, was hired by the South Dakota mining Company to find gold in the cave, but was eventually unsuccessful. Instead, a prospect was opened to send tours into the cave. These early tours conducted to explore the cave were done by candlelight and at times by crawling through narrow passageways.
Wind Cave was the first cave to be titled as the National Park in the world. It showcases calcite formations which are known as box work. It is believed that about 95 % of box work is founded in the wind cave. It is also known for its frost work.
The Wind Cave National Park was established in 1903. Until 1956 there were not any major explorations done to the cave, it was during 1963 to 1965 the exploration started and this exploration is still being processed.
Wind Cave National Park protects the 87 miles of passageways below it, but it plays a role of a home to host Black Hills features which include mountains, ponderosa forest, prairies, hiking trails of all of the National Park service's to be found in South Dakota.

The best route to get to Wind Cave is through Custer State Park on scenic US 87, whicheven connects to the Needles Highway
