South Dakota is famous for its caves and caverns. In South Dakota the Black Hill region is very much popular for its caves. These caves were created when the underground water dissolved layers of limestone which took the shape in huge passage ways water carried the dissolved minerals while flowing to these passageways. The calcium carbonate which was one of the minerals deposited crystals on to caves ceilings and walls which resulted in caves creation
There are various caves found in the region of Black Hills of South Dakota like Mount Rushmore Caves, Jewel Cave National Monument, Wind Cave National Park, Crystal Caverns and Crystal Caves, Black Hills Caverns, Sitting Bull Crystal Caverns etc.
Crystal Cavern set-up has two privately owned caves namely Crystal Cave Park and Sitting Bull crystal Cavern
Crystal Cave Park is the most popular destination spot which is located in the Pennsylvania and millions of people use to visit this place since it was discovered in 1871. It is considered as one of the most beautiful caverns as more than 80 % of ceilings and walls are covered with crystals. It even includes a pool with a live trout and it provides an astonishing and learning experience to the visitors. Before the tour actually start up the tourist can view the slide show which gives the details of how caves are formed. Crystal Ballroom, Totem Pole, the Natural Bridge, the Indian Head, The Cathedral Chamber, Giant's Tooth, the Prairies Dogs, Tobacco Leaves and Ear of Corn are the natural creations of this place. There are other attractions too which is also a must visit.
Sitting Bull Cavern is located in south of Rapid City. Alex and Marie Duhamel and their sons Bud and Pete started exploring and developing cave. The Duhamel wanted to share this treasure with the other people/visitors to the Black hills. The Duhamel took the help from their friend a Lakota Sioux, medicine man Black Elk. The Duhamel with the guidance of Black Elk, created a Sioux Indian Pageant. It offered educational and cultural demonstrations which helped in a way as it help to increase the flow of visitors to the area and helped to flourish Sitting Bull Cavern. The tours to Sitting Bull Cavern are available from May through September.
